Tangents and Normals to a Parabola and Its Reflection Property
Tangent at a point, in parametric form and slope form (y = mx + a/m), tangents from an external point and the intersection of tangents, the normal y = -tx + 2at + at^3 and co-normal points, chord of contact and chord with given midpoint, and the reflection property.
All formulas are for ; the and notation works as for the circle, with , and .
Tangents.
At a point on the curve: , i.e. .
At the parametric point : , with slope .
Slope form: touches at . The condition for to be a tangent is .
Tangents at and meet at : the -coordinate is times the product and the -coordinate times the sum of the parameters. So tangents at the ends of a focal chord () meet on the directrix , and they are perpendicular (slopes with product ). The directrix is therefore the director circle of the parabola.
Tangents from an external point . The slopes satisfy , i.e. : two tangents, with and . Chord of contact: . Chord with midpoint : .
Normals.
At : , with slope .
Slope form: , the normal at .
Through a given point , the normal condition is a cubic in , so up to three normals can be drawn (co-normal points). Their slopes satisfy , so the sum of the corresponding -coordinates of the feet, , is zero. Three real normals from a point on the axis exist only if .
If the normal at meets the parabola again at , then . The normal chord is shortest when .
Geometric properties.
Reflection property: the tangent at makes equal angles with the focal radius and with the line through parallel to the axis. Hence rays parallel to the axis reflect off the parabola and pass through the focus, as the figure shows. This is why satellite dishes and car headlamps are parabolic.
The foot of the perpendicular from the focus to any tangent lies on the tangent at the vertex ().
The tangent at bisects the angle between and the perpendicular from to the directrix.
The portion of a tangent between the point of contact and the directrix subtends a right angle at the focus.
The subnormal is constant: equal to .
Key Takeaways:
- Tangent at : ; slope form .
- Tangents at meet at .
- Tangents at focal chord ends are perpendicular and meet on the directrix.
- Normal at : ; slope form .
- Up to normals from a point; .
- Normal at meets again at .
- Reflection property: axis-parallel rays pass through the focus.
- Pitfall: using the circle's tangency condition for a parabola.
Brain-Teaser 1: Find the equation of the common tangent to and .
Solution: A tangent to is . For it to touch , substitute: must have a repeated root: , so and . The common tangent is , i.e. . By symmetry of the two parabolas about , the common tangent must be perpendicular to that line, which agrees.
Brain-Teaser 2: Prove that the tangents at the ends of any focal chord of intersect at right angles on the directrix.
Solution: The ends have parameters and . The tangents have slopes and , whose product is , so they are perpendicular. They meet at , which lies on . Parameters make the proof two lines long.
Brain-Teaser 3: The normal to at meets the curve again at . Show that , and find the least possible value of .
Solution: The chord from to has slope , and the normal at has slope . Equating: , so and . Then by AM-GM, with equality at . So : a normal chord always ends at least as far out as parameter .
